Findspot: Smyrna, Basilica (Agora.1)
Drawing Category: Other
Writing Style: charcoal
  • Graffito Height: 63

Bibliography: Bagnall, R. S. et al., Graffiti from the Basilica in the Agora of Smyrna (2016): 370.
Commentary: Dipinto in black ink, located on the northern face of Pier A73, looking into the Basilica’s northern corridor. The iconography is uncertain: the dipinto is damaged at the top where the plaster has fallen off the pier, but it seems to be finished both at the bottom and at the two sides. The spiral motif at the center recalls the ἀκροστόλιον of a ship’s prow, but such an identification is uncertain.
